Causes of appendicitis

appendix

Appendicitis refers to an inflammation of the appendix (also known as the cecal appendage or vermix) , and it is a common condition that affects almost one in ten people in the United States alone. There are a few possible causes for appendicitis and we will examine some of these here.

The most common cause of appendicitis symptoms is that the appendix lumen becomes blocked.  This lumen is a type of tube in the appendix and this blockage causes a buildup of fluids inside. This causes the appendage to die and so it turns necrotic. The necrotic tissue creates pus and this pus contains bacteria. As the pressure build this pus can escape and lead to what is known as peritonitis and increased appendix attack symptoms. If the pressure becomes too much there is a risk of the appendage bursting open and leading to a situation that could prove fatal for the body.

There are quite a few things that can cause the appendix lumen to become blocked and begin the process that creates the appendicitis symptoms. A tumor growing nearby could push against the appendix and cause the lumen to block. If you have a cold or similar condition then it could cause the lymph glands inside the appendix to swell and block the lumen. It could also happen that an object, such as fecal matter, can enter the tube and cause a blockage. This blockage could also begin because of the overproduction of thick mucus inside the appendage. Worm infestations have also been known to cause problems.

As well as a blocked lumen there are also other events that can precipitate the appendix attack symptom. There are many different diseases that can infect the appendix and cause it to become inflamed and subsequently rupture. Trauma is yet another possibility.

Now that you know about the possible causes of appendicitis it is also important that you understand what to do if you experience appendicitis symptoms. If your appendix ruptures it could lead to your death so it is vital that you don’t delay with getting treatment. The most usual appendix attack symptoms are; abdominal pain and tenderness, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, frequent urination, diarrhea, and a slight fever – if you have these symptoms or think that there is any possibility that you could have appendicitis then you must get yourself checked out by a hospital. Treating appendicitis is relatively straight forward, but treating death is not so easy.

The majority of people reading this will have already heard about the medical condition appendicitis, but they may be less sure about causes it to happen. The following article will try and examines this issue.

There are still some questions that need answering in regards to the causes of appendicitis symptoms, but there are a few ideas as to why it happens. A frequent cause is believed to be obstruction of the appendix lumen. The appendix (also known as the vermix or cecal appendage) has a tube and it is this that can become blocked or otherwise obstructed. The cause of this blockage could include quite a few different possibilities. Fecal matter or some other object from the colon might enter the appendix and cause the obstruction. A tumor growing in the body might press down on it. Certain intestinal worms can also cause the blockage. During a time when we are suffering from the common cold or similar condition it could lead to the lymph nodes in the appendix becoming swollen and occluding the lumen. All of these events can cause appendix attack symptoms.

When the appendix lumen is blocked it can lead to a buildup of fluids inside the appendix and it is this that begins the appendicitis symptoms that tell you that something is wrong. The pressure and lack of nutrients cause the appendix to die and this leads to pus forming that contains harmful bacteria. Small amounts of this pus can leak out causing peritonitis, or the appendix can burst with the pressure and this can cause sepsis and quite easily death. This is why it is so important that you seek help if you think that you may be experiencing appendix attack symptoms. The condition can be easily treated with surgery so long as you don’t delay.

As well as blockages in the appendix lumen there are also other possible causes for triggering these appendix attack symptoms. Sometimes a disease might cause the appendix to become inflamed and swollen; it can become so swollen that it actually bursts. It might also be the case that some type of trauma such as a knife stabbing could cause the problem.

The above has just been a brief look at the possible causes of appendicitis and the appendix attack symptoms. Remember to always seek medical attention if you there is any possibility that you are dealing with this condition; it is always better to be safe than sorry.

When looking for the causes of appendicitis we will be trying to determine what caused the appendix (sometimes called the cecal appendage or vermix) to leak infected pus into the abdomen. It is this pus that triggers the appendicitis symptoms. We will know look at some of the reasons why this might happen.

Anything that can block or obstruct the appendix lumen (a tube in the appendix) and this means fluid in the appendage can’t leave and bacteria begin to multiply. The blockage can also lead to the death of the appendix as the cells turn necrotic due to lack of nutrition. All the while, bacteria are increasing and will now slowly leak out of the cell to cause peritonitis and the appendix attack symptoms. If the pressure inside the appendage gets too high then it can burst and cause sepsis which is life threatening.

There are a few different reasons why the appendix lumen might become blocked. It could be that there is something pressing on it such as a tumor that is growing nearby. A frequent cause is an object entering and getting stuck; this could be fecal matter, or even intestinal worms. If you have swollen lymph glands due to a cold it can mean that the lymph glands on the appendix becomes swollen and it will be this that triggers the events leading to a blocked lumen and onto appendicitis symptoms.

It is not only when the appendix lumen is blocked that you are at risk of developing appendix attack symptoms.  A stab would or other trauma could rupture the appendage. It can also occur if there is some type of disease process that leads to the appendix becoming inflamed and swollen. The swelling can become so bad that it causes the appendage to burst open.

All the causes of appendicitis symptoms are not fully understood yet, but research continues. The important thing with the condition it is not allowed to develop until the stage where the appendix bursts because this can cause sepsis and possibly death. It is vital than anyone experiencing appendicitis symptoms – sharp pain around the abdomen, tenderness in the right iliac fossa, nausea and vomiting, fever, loss to appetite – get seen to straight away.  Delaying can lead to death from a problem that is easily dealt with by hospitals around the world every day. If you have appendix attack symptoms you need to be seen and quickly.
